GDA Speaks With Randy Eller at January 2017 Las Vegas Market
GDA Editorial Director Warren Shoulberg talks to Randy Eller, president of Eller Enterprises, at the Las Vegas Market. Eller discusses his views about the gift business and industry mergers and acquisitions for 2017.
2017... A Happy New Year?
The answer to the question… it’s really up to you. Let me explain. Whew! As I write this it is the afternoon of November 7. The day before the ugliest presidential election in history. My deadline is today but it really doesn’t matter because it wouldn’t change a word I’m typing.
Brand... or Die
My goodness, the world is moving at breakneck speed to commerce on the Internet. What does this mean to you in its simplest form? It means that as a retailer or a vendor, you must move at breakneck speed to build a brand connection with consumers.
Get Ready for a Great Year
Things are looking up for 2016. First, a word about the Atlanta show that just ended… SPECTACULAR!!! For gift vendors that I spoke to, it sounded like we were back in the early 2000’s.

Adapting to Change
New technology, new ways of working, it’s all here for the gift industry. So what’s holding us back? I’ve just returned from the annual Gift, Home and Trade Association conference, held this year in Austin, TX. As usual, GHTA presented a number of solid educational workshops, keynote speeches and lots of networking activities.
Despite sometimes negative news such as the most recent stock market stumbles, be ready for the holiday shopping season. It's fast approaching, either way. I've been getting calls for the last couple of weeks on what's happening in the stock market and whether or not I think this latest "crash" will hurt consumer spending and negatively affect the fall selling season in our stores.
Grow Sales or Profit
Take control of the relationship with Internet retailers, and your profit margin, by building and leveraging a must-have brand. In the '80s, '90s and early 2000s, the world was full of chain stores with the basic business model of demanding significant discounts on pricing from vendors, then adding insult to injury by creating "routing guides" which were really just a French term for profit center.
Are You Special?
There's growth in differentiation. I swear I thought I was dreaming at this January's Atlanta market, where virtually everyone I spoke with made comments I once feared would never be said again.
You Do Have Other Options
It's time to consider other markets to grow your business and move forward in the future. My previous article, "There is Only One Customer Now" has generated a lot of response. I seem to have hit a nerve, which I fully intended to do. Growth has to be encouraged. Growth has to be spurred. Growth, most of the time, has to be painful to be effective.
There is Only One Customer Now
There was a time in this industry, not so long ago, when things were much simpler. Everyone knew their role and it worked well. Vendors in this industry had one customer: the brick-and-mortar stores. The brick and - mortar stores had one customer: the consumer.
Time to Get Involved!
Change is underfoot in the various trade organizations within our industry to tackle serious topics and work to find solutions to improve our industry.
Grumpy Came, Grumpy Conquered
A seismic event happened at the Atlanta show. Women were giggling like girls, and men were trying to hide the moistness in their eyes. Thank God they don't allow children in AmericasMart, or we would have had a riot. The line of retailers trying to see a live cat exceeded anything I've seen for a signing by a human being. Remarkable.
GDA Speaks With Randy Eller at Las Vegas Market
GDA Editorial Director Warren Shoulberg talks to Randy Eller, president of Eller Enterprises, at the Las Vegas Market. Eller discusses 2014 business trends and positive effects from the housing market rebound, plus merger and acquisition activity.
Consumer Cash Moving Again
Ladies and gentlemen, there is a huge shift under way in consumer spending, and it will change this industry in 2014. The age of baubles is declining; the home will once again be the king and queen of spending.
Management Do's and Dont's
I'm sure that everyone reading this has been following somewhat the news over the last few months concerning the meltdown at JCPenney. for me, it's been a combination of disbelief and wonderment that a company this large with this much money behind it could have made this many mistakes. Hindsight is always 20/20, so what can we all learn about what happened to this great company, and not make those same mistakes?
Follow the Money, But Be Careful
After attending the Atlanta gift show, I think we need to change the name of our industry from gift & home to apparel & home. It is amazing to see the transition in the marketplace over the past 18 months into ladies fashion accessories and now full blown apparel. This might just be the best industry in the world for money following trends and hot items. Herein lays the danger....
The presidential election is now over and two things are abundantly clear after watching the entire process. First, having people be so divided about what is good, or what is bad, for the country, is not a good thing. It makes people feel tense, some even angry, and ensures that at least half of the population at any given moment is in a perpetual state of being fed up.

Recommit To The Fundamentals
In a previous article published just after the January markets, I marveled at how once again those markets were strong and the sky did not fall. The rest of the article (Gift s and Decorative Accessories, February 2012) was devoted to the premise that our industry seems to be falling into a pattern of fantastic winter markets and slow summer ones.

Once Again, The Sky Did Not Fall
As I write this, it's a few days after the new year and I've had the opportunity to call several independent retailers I have known for years. They are all excellent retailers, from various parts of the country, and I trust them implicitly to tell me the truth about their businesses and what's happening in the world of independent retailing.
